Night of the Living Zombie Meets The Chihuahua
It's my own fault for not going to bed early. Putting Miss O down later is also my fault, and she subsequently did not sleep well because she's off her schedule. She started waking up around 3am but settled back down around 5:30. Meanwhile, the dog...is actually a very nice little dog. She's a Chihuahua and has some very sweet qualities, and during the day, she's been basically very good as long as I keep an eye on her. However, the nights have not been the best. I found out on Tuesday that she's somewhat nocturnal...well now, that actually explains alot.
So, I need to take a moment to reassure my friend (for whom I am dog sitting and who may or may not read this entry) that this is NO reflection on her or, really, her dog. Overall, I like her dog--she just really is attached to my friend and misses her. In fact, if I wasn't so pregnant, I'd probably really like her dog, but talk about being off a schedule and routine, poor thing! Consequently, she's just been a bit more work than I expected (especially when I am as sleep deprived as I am), and I probably still don't know all her cues/timetables for needing to go outside and eating and stuff like that. Let me explain.
She (the dog) has some very sweet traits, and yet she also has some really annoying ones...like she pees or has other accidents on my carpet if you don't watch her and make sure she's gone outside, and if you set her outside, she won't go to the bathroom unless you chaperon her and walk her down the stairs from the deck into the yard and then walk her AROUND the yard...even if she has to go really really bad. Then, to complicate things, just last night she's started rubbing her bum across my carpet. I hated that with my own dog. It means her glands need to be emptied and are likely impacted, and she's probably pretty uncomfortable, but...um...that's not my job. I'll let her "folks" know, though.
In the meantime, I set up a pen yard type of thing to keep her in while we are gone during the day and at night, and she's been doing fairly well (I've had her for about 10 days now and she really misses her "mom," to the point that the first few nights she howled like a cat in heat pretty much throughout the night, and then the last few, she just scratches and scratches on...something. I'm not sure, but I think it's the plastic pen yard thing...I hope it's not my wood floors...and the last few nights there has been a mysterious wetness around one side of the pen we found in the morning...is it pee? I just don't know). This hasn't been a real problem because we can close doors and we have "white noise" machines in our rooms. However, that being said, she definitely got on my last nerve last night, probably because every time I'd have Miss O back to sleep and I'd open Miss O's door, the dog would start in again...howling or scratching madly, thus waking her up. I was not happy.
Anyway, her "dad" comes to pick her up today. And while I'll miss her sweet qualities, I think we'll both be very happy she finally gets to go home.

Too Much Ambition = Need for Bar of Soap = Probably Need A Nap
So. Why not go right after swim class, I reason to myself? I can save gas by not coming home AND we can just get these errands run and then BE DONE with them. It sounds so good, especially since Miss O and I are done with that Mommy & Me class, so I will not be soaking wet and utterly exhausted. Ha! However, we still dress in the ol' swimsuits so she can play in the "zero entry" pool area for kids 0-7 yrs old. She's very cute getting a teensy bit wet then running back to me. When Miss A & E are done, they join us for 10 minutes and then I call time and we go off to the "family changing room" to get changed. I do not realize that all the hugs Miss O has given me have saturated the left boob part of my swimsuit top, thus when I put my shirt over my swimsuit, it looks as if I am a nursing mother who has leaked profusely. Nice.
And, this is where *I* start falling apart...in the "family changing room" with my left side of my shirt completely wet and obvious. It is also hot and sticky in this cement hole. Meanwhile, the girls are really just being almost 6, 4, and 2. In other words, they are acting their age by being enamoured with all things in the bathroom, needing to use the toilet, dropping the towels and clothes on the wet floor, telling me I'm doing things wrong and, basically in general, just being kids. *I* do NOT act my age and start grousing (ARGH! Okay, okay...speaking in unkind tones) for them to LISTEN to MOMMY and PUT THEIR SHOES ON and GET DRESSED! AND *&^%$#. Yep. I swear. Right after I told them to specifically listen to me. ARGH!!!!!! It is, admittedly, one of my "finer" mothering moments.
I apologize for losing it and we get out to the car. I continue to apologize for losing it until we arrive at Target. We do some shopping. I get a weird ligament pain and long desperately for a place to sit down. Instead, we have to go all the way across the store to find some bug spray.
Let's pause here and share some annoyance, shall we? Can someone please tell me why they don't put insect repellent next to their many many displays of sunscreen? Both are for the outside activities. Why can they not have both together????? Why must I go to the CAMPING section to find any type of bug spray? And why will I find a perfectly good bottle of it, later after the next incident, suitable for children, tossed in with the $1.00 items at the front of the store? GRRRRRRRRRR.
On top of that, as we are looking, I run over Miss A's toes with the &*^%$! cart (swearing occurrence #2) and the little metal thing that is on the back right wheel catch her toes, which are currently revealed thanks to her swim class Princess flip flops she chose to wear, and it scrapes several of them up. Luckily, there is no bleeding (else, trust me, the mood I was in, I'd be YELLING for a manager to swear at...sigh), but there is pain and I feel TERRIBLE. AWFUL. And what do I say to her? "I'm so sorry honey. Next time, let's wear more reasonable shoes."
ARGH!!!!! Like it's her poor shoe choice that has caused her mother to run over her toes and scrape them up. I swear again (that makes THREE times, but who's counting????) as I hug her and reassure her that I truly am sorry.
And here we see an ugly character flaw of Miss L: besides the swearing and absolute loss of self control, we see that when I feel really bad and responsible for something, like if my kids fall and/or are injured or whatever, and especially if I have warned them to watch out or be careful or some such thing, the overwhelming emotion of concern that I feel mixes with my own guilt that I have failed them somehow and emerges as anger because I no longer have control over the situation. Thus I am not completely reassuring and comforting. In fact, I am the OPPOSITE. I shove most of the blame onto them because if ONLY they had HEEDED my ohsocareful warnings. And, especially, if they are crying, I want them to stop so *I* can calm down. It's incredibly selfish on my part, and I'm trying to be better, but I still slip up.
We end our very very trying trip to Target in their little food court, where of course the Pizza Hut cashiers must give a refund to some woman but neither of them know how, so we are actually stuck in line until almost the breaking point, but luckily we get some food in all of us just in time. And then we have actually a very nice lunch and make our way out to the car when Miss O somehow loses contact with her cup and her refilled medium size beverage slips out of her hands and spills out in the parking lot. Weeping and wailing commences in 3...2...1...now.
Of course. Of course!
Miss A magnanimously offers to share her lemonade with Miss O, and Miss O accepts but that does not stop the WAILING that is going on. Once again, I am not feeling very comforting because I told her to hold it with both hands and she did not listen. We get to the car and I tell Miss O that it's time to dry it up and I do not want to hear any more about it, especially since Miss A is going to share. Miss O complies. We get in the car. We start to drive home. We get caught in a TORRENTIAL downpour from a pop-up Thunderstorm. I kinda laugh maniacally to myself and we get home, get unloaded and here we are now.
We have survived The Errands. I think next time, I'll just come home and assess the situation and maybe go AFTER naps and lunch and downtime. And this is how I gain my pearls of wisdom...sigh.

Life...continued.

Driving to swimming lessons (more on that later):
Miss A: "Mom! I saw some Queen's Ant's Lace!"
Miss E: "Yeah, Mom! We see some Queen Ant's Lace!!!"
Pause, pause.
Me: "You mean, Queen ANNE'S Lace?"
Both: "Who?"
"Queen Anne. That's was her name. Not as in the bugs, but her name is ANNE."
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh."

Update: Super J fixed the broom. And there was much rejoicing in Crumb Land ("hooray!").
I asked, are you sure you can fix it? He just looked at me like I'd asked him if he had two eyes. I'm sure, somewhere in the distance, theme music started. He went out to the garage and, using who knows what, he got the broken-off screw thingy out of the broom head and put a very green handle (from an old broom or mop, I dunno. It looked vaguely familiar, but I haven't used something with a green handle for quite some time) on the yellow broom head. It's not real pretty to look at, but it works. And it didn't cost a thing.
************************************
I have a fear that Miss O is currently enjoying an ear infection. There is no fever, but the child refuses to go down for bed tonight! It's 12:00ish, and I have finally succumbed to letting her just cry. She's been given ibruprofen, some ear drops and finally something to releave congestion (and hopefully some pressure in the ear). It's either ear infection or 2 year old molars are starting to come in. Either way, now we are both tired of each other and I am done. Argh. I hate getting to this point because I feel like a bad mommy. Oh well. I shall not dwell.
Instead, let me enthrall you with the fact that we went to our first Mommy & me swimming lesson today (Misses A & E had "real" lessons during the same time. Blessedly, they are all 30 minutes long, which truly is quite short when one is actually in the water). Initially, Miss O was JOYOUS to be there. She kicked like a pro--both on her tummy and on her back. She put her chin in the water. She kinda put her ear in the water. She did GREAT.
For 15 minutes.
And then she was done and wanted out of the pool and wanted NOTHING more to do with it...until the "lesson" was done and everyone else was getting out of the pool, and then she was DESPERATE to get back into the pool. Ugh. Very hard to pick up fit-pitching child who should not be quite so close to the pool when pitching said fit when one has swallowed a bowling ball which currently resides in el stomacho (you may not be able to tell by this word choice, but I don't know Spanish. Sorry). So, I don't know what's wrong with her. Swimmers ear? Ear infection? Molars? She's almost 2 (in a week! Holy Smokes (or smocks, as I just typed...that seems to kinda work, too).
In the meantime, Miss A & E were very very good, both behaviorally and at their swim lessons. They do want to stay and play in the little adjoining water park, that is right next to the pools where the swim lessons take place. I, honestly, don't know if I have that in me. I was EXHAUSTED by the time we got home. It takes about an hour to prep for swim lessons and get everyone fed, pottied, dressed, buckled in the car and then readied for the lesson, then it takes 20 minutes to get back to the car AFTER swim lessons and then you come home, get everyone changed and snacked (but not too much snack because lunch is just around the corner). Yep. Tired.
And on that happy note, I cannot believe we are going to swim lessons for the next 7 weekdays. What was I thinking??? Oh yeah. I don't want my kids to drown when they go to our local, un-life-guarded pool because they have a false sense that they "can swim" because they use one of those blow-up tube thingies.
True story: The other day, I was reminding Miss E that she was starting swimming classes and she happily chirped, "Can I be the teacher?"
"Ummmm, no honey. They are lessons for you to take."
"But I already know how to swim" (with the inner tube thingy).
"And that's why you are taking more lessons, hon."

So, Super J left town this afternoon (after fixing the broom...Ta Da!) for a business trip.
In honor of that, I took the liberty of going to Panera Bread for a little something for Momma and then took the kids to McDonald's for some Happy Meals and Playland playtime (and, honestly, a Redbox Chick flick for me).
Here's the quick and dirty review of the evenings events:
Panera Bread: a little slice of the hot place when one has 3 kiddos and Miss O decides she is going to do her impression of a legless sack of potatoes (I know, I know, potato sacks often do NOT have legs and if they did, they'd be very scary indeed, but let's just say she went boneless practically the entire time we were there because she DID NOT WANT TO HOLD MY HAND and was OFFENDED that I was making her. Ugh). AND, on top of that...where do they get the help these days. No, wait. That's not fair. But let's call a spade a spade and say that the highschoolers at Panera on this particular evening were about as helpful as...rotted basil. And as filled with energy and happiness to be working at Panera, I might add, as that rotted basil. Not impressed.
Walking out to the car from Panera Bread: HUGE slice of the hot place because some idiot older man driver in a little sporty coupe decided he was going to speed through the parking lot, give me and my little ducklings the right of way to cross the street, only to then turn into the lane at a quick speed trying to get the empty parking spot that was right next to where we were walking. Miss O TRIPS (of course), luckily NOT in the path of the car, but parallel to it, successfully freaking me, Misses A & E, and I hope with any good fortune, that asinine driver completely OUT. Seriously, she totally could have been hit because of this #$%@*&(^% speedy driving.
I mean, if it was AT ALL busy, I might have understood his rush to Get. That. Spot. But there was no other car coming or going near us. AND there was another empty spot two cars down from this particular spot. AND there were 3 empty car spots open from that second option spot. I must admit, I was NOT thinking kind Christian thoughts about this gentleman (clearly). Instead, I wanted to really light into him for his Total Display of Stupidity. I was hashed. But I was still freaked from my child almost being hit and so I just got us all in the Red Rocket and took a big drag from my beverage (diet caffine free Pepsi with a shot of Pepsi. Very nice. I like it better than Coke products, as stated before...somewhere), and, true confessions, horked down my half turkey sandwich.
McDonald's: Thus in my stellar mood, we drive around the outdoor mall and arrive at McDonald's. We go in, order the food, and I get a beverage (they have Light Minute Maid Lemonade at this McDonald's. Also very nice and refreshing). I realize after I paid that I should have gotten a large because then I'd get a free redbox DVD rental. Argh. I ask the cashier, "Is it too late to upgrade my drink to a large?"
"Nope," she says, and starts swapping the cups.
"How much?" I ask, digging through my wallet and getting some change ready.
Get this: "No charge."
I could have reached over and kissed her. I mean, how nice was that. And she even gave me one of the free DVD rental cups.
I also wanted to say, "Panera Bread has NOTHING on you tonight, friendly helpful people at McDonald's!"
AND to make things, seriously, even better...there were hardly any people in the Playland. I hesitate to say this, but it was almost soothing to be there. The kids played...used the bathroom facilities (Alot...ohholycow, they must have been saving up for a trip to use public restrooms!)...and had a nice, low key time.
Holy Smocks! It's after 1:00am. Okay, tomorrow, I shall continue this enthralling tale of my Monday evening, with a riviting story of how much of a dork I am when trying to get a movie out of the Red Box. Yegads. And I'll give you a review of the movie, 27 Dresses.

Abilify...
Isn't it soothing that, "Hundreds of Thousands of Patients have been prescribed" this medicine??? I guess that's how they know about all the "side-effects." Yeesh! It'd be funny if it wasn't so scary.

The good, the bad...
I'm not sure what happened last night, but Miss O was up several times and Miss E kept popping up and finally decided she couldn't sleep until she'd spent at least an hour in our bed with us (I lost track of time). I eventually asked Super J to put her back to bed around 2:12 A.M. because I couldn't sleep with my sweet bambino breathing on my arm...over and over again...hot moist breath...on my arm, continuously. Or my back, if I turned over. Kinda freaked me out, as I normally am hugging a pillow that tends to be on the cool side.
Miss E is a sweetie and I don't begrudge her needing a little...security? I mean, after all, we were gone for 4 days and I think we are seeing some of the aftermath happening. But still. Holy cow.
So, I thought I'm going to look for some silver linings. Are you ready? Me, too.
1) Hopefully, this evening I'm going to a book warehouse sale with the awesome Miss A.L. Wahoo! I feel sure to find some great deals, because you get $10 off if you spend $50. I know, I know. This is the wrong reason to spend $50, but with Summer coming up, we are ready for some new books in our house collection that I don't have to hyperventilate about when Miss O starts pulling out pages and ripping covers off (which happens with library books and our preschool books). So, taking that into consideration: It is, comparatively, a SMALL price to pay.
2) Um...
3)...I know there are more.
4) Hang on...one is coming to me. Um...I am awake and here to face a new day! Unfortunately, that 85% crabbiness has been up-ed to about 97%, but that's not focusing on the silver linings in life. Moving on...
5) Oh! We are regular viewers of American Idol, and the two Davids are in the AI finale! That's fun. Out of all of the contestants, I like them the best. It took me a while to become a David Cook fan, but surely it happened. I'm not necessarily a David A. fan, but I do find his voice is often smooth and creamy, like a good yogurt (is that a compliment??? Hmmm), and I think he's honestly sweet. Unfortunately, he suffers from Mitt Romney/Mormon syndrome, where people think he's a fake kind of nice, but I think it's a mixture of being a Utah Mormon ("Gosh!" and a lack of dancing ability...not that that is a consistant thing in Utah, because BYU has some amazing dancers...holy cow!...but let's be honest and say this boy is a prime example of "The Deacon Shuffle." Sad.) and then I read an article about him being super shy, and thinking of some family members, I could actually see that, so I started cutting him some slack. How overwhelming an experience for both of these young men (Ohhhhhhh, that I am at the point to call them young men! I used to date guys the age of David Cook when I was still single. Now I'd be a cougar. Ewwwww. Thank goodness for Super J).
Anyway, I think it'll be an interesting contest because they both have such different appeals and fan bases. Seriously, Gentle Reader, did you see all the crying girls and rapturous audiences???? Truth be told, I myself cried during each of the visits back home, thinking how crazy tired these AI contestants must be and how overwhelming to feel such support from strangers who are embracing you while you are trying to fulfil a dream/goal. Craziness! This is one reason I would never want to be on AI. I get no sleep as it is, and look at how happy I am. Sheesh! I'd have been voted off very early, even if people were in love with my choir voice.
What kind of voice do you have? I mean, obviously there are people who have voices to be soloists, voices cut out to be in bands and then there are those of us who can be in choirs. I have a choir voice. It's nothing too much on it's own, but it blends really well with others. I'm okay with that. When they come out with "American Consensus Singers," I might have to sign up. There's no way I'd be cut out for the actual "AI," though. Just being honest.
6) There are more, obviously, when I look at overt silver linings that are all around me. I mean, seriously, I am BLESSED with Super J and The Misses A,E, and O. I'm enjoying a regular pregnancy and it's progressing just fine. We live in a country where there have been no earthquakes that have trapped over 20,000 and killed over 10,000 via natural disaster. I live in the land of plenty and definitely have my 3 months of storage...even as gas prices are going up, there is a sense of security. We have enough. Heck! I can afford to go buy some books for my household. So, yes. I am blessed and those are HUGE silver linings.
Perhaps I just wish that consistent sleep was part of 'em, too, at this point because I gotta tell ya...I feel like I was hit by a bus!
Have a great day! I'm working on mine. :)

Ooooooo Miss O and Miss Grumpy Pants
We have been up since about 8:00. So far, "we" have dumped water not once, not twice, but THREE times. Gosh! Maybe even four times, because at one point, she was pouring water from one cup to another...so I lose count. But it's definitely more than once. All while I am trying to get Miss E's cake done for her birthday. GRRRRRR. She's also gotten into all the wipes, and then found all the empty boxes of wipes and brought them all out (don't ask why I haven't pitched these empty containers. I'm sure I read about some fabulous storage idea in "Real Simple" magazine). She's currently carrying the boxes from one room to the next and trying to sit on them.
I am 100% sure that if I wasn't trying to get stuff done, none of this would bother me. Okay. I lie. All the water dumping would and does bother me. But the wipe thing...I'm kinda used to that by now, as it seems to be a rite of passage when you are in your (near) two's. But right now, I'm so dang grumpy it's not even funny.
Hmmmmm...did I mention I just got back from a great getaway with Super J? Yes. It only took 24 hours for me to snap like a crazed thing at my kids yesterday...around 5:47ish. I know because I looked at the clock, having realized I'd just done it. How sad is that?
UPDATE 1: Just had to put Miss O in time out because she was pitching a fit concerning moving chairs and touching the computer's on/off button. She keeps telling me "NO! NO! NO!" and I keep telling her, "I know! That's what I'm saying, too." So, to the step she went and I sat by her and waxed eloquent to my 22 month old about how frustrating it is not to get our own way, etc. etc. She is continuing to cry during my little sermon. Then all of a sudden, she stops. She looks at me and I swear, she says, "I feel better, Momma." We hug and she gets up, fit over. Bizarre.
UPDATE 2: 10 minutes later. Keep in mind, I'm still in my pajama's and didn't bother with a bath yesterday. Thus, I look pretty darn scary. There is a knock at the door. I make a mad dash to put something more appropriate on (pants verses pj shorts) and answer it. Two sweet Jehovah's Witnesses are there. They ask how I feel about the current state of the world, bringing up the scary things that are going on, including how terrible gas prices are, and I tell them that I am LDS and that we need to be wise, not panic, but realize that there is hope and that all this is part of a plan. They share a scripture out of Revelations and agree that there is hope. They leave a pamphlet (it will refer me to scriptures from my own Bible...loved that) and I ask if they need water or anything. Nope. They've just started out and are doing well. I wish them luck and share that I did this when I was 21 and know it's not the easiest thing sharing messages of hope, and they depart with smiles and waves from the girls.
And guess who doesn't feel quite so grumpy. :)

Things NOT to do when you are G.R.U.M.P.Y.
So here are things NOT to do when grumpy:
2. Do NOT cut your own hair in an attempt to give yourself bangs and a jaunty spring/Easter attitude and hairdo. You know you always cut above the scissors, thus giving yourself a British Sci-fi Heroine look that you, yourself, find personally abhorrent. You also know that you cannot stop with bangs, and instead will give yourself the new definition of "layers." Comfort yourself in knowing that, once you have taken yourself to "Ze Bathroom Zalon," that you have naturally curly hair that is very forgiving. Also know that in 3 weeks, your bangs will look fabulous and you can wear them outside the headband with pride.
3. Do NOT even ponder for more than a few seconds threatening your children with throwing all their toys in the garbage if they do not get them cleaned up because you are tired of no one listening to you and if they want any of their friends to visit on the first day of spring and play on the swing set they had better darn well get it cleaned up. Instead, feel proud of yourself for threatening to put your children's toys In TIMEOUT for two weeks if they don't get them cleaned up because you are tired of no one listening to you and if they want any of their friends....
4. Do NOT personally throw children's toys away when disgusted with the cute but useless little cubby thing that is supposed to contain appropriately small percentage of all the toys that emerge into your living room from the basement wonderland of toys (the basement being homebase where all toys technically belong). Instead, really be proud of yourself when you haul said useless cubby thing down to the basement and bring up a much bigger, much more realistic storage bin container because, seriously, this is how your children clean...by throwing all toys, papers, sippies, Barbies, babies, dinosaurs, dress-up clothes, necklaces, Happy Meal Toys and play dough remnants into one big plastic container.
5. Do NOT feed your children their snack of Easter cookies that your Visiting Teacher/Neighbor truly thoughtfully dropped off the evening before and you carelessly promised to your children during the grumpy morning hours that they could have for a snack after they'd finished breakfast and got dressed. Because by the time you finally emerge from "Ze Bathroom Zalon," it will be 11:50 when you are serving these frosted gigantic beauties and lunch will be postponed for...heck, who knows how long. Instead, comfort yourself by serving large glasses of milk and think that somehow the protein of the bovine liquid will balance out the sugar content and maybe you could just claim this as lunch.
I'm sure there are more things NOT to do when grumpy, but I myself did not have an Easter cookie and I realize that if I don't eat something soon, I will get grumpy again and have to start this whole process over.
Oh. By the way: Happy First Day of Spring.
