The Question...

To Vaccinate or NOT to Vaccinate. That is the question. For this H1N1 flu thing. What are you gonna do, Gentle Reader? Do you know? Have you already gotten it already? And if so, did it turn out well?

I don't personally plan on vaccinating. We've had swine flu rushing through here already. I am not opposed to vaccinating in principle, but right now I think there are a lot of folks who really need it more than I do, and the supplies are limited.

*good thoughts*

Well, currently my pediatrician's office is out of the H1N1 vaccine. If they get more, I'll probably go ahead and get the girls vaccinated, but I doubt I'll get it for myself. Why? Well, because that's pretty much how I do it very year. The girls get vaccinated, (and honestly? I think that's primarily because they get their annual check-ups every year in late October or early November, so vaccines are on the minds of the medical staff. They offer it, I say yes. I don't think I would even think to ask about flu-shots if they didn't. That's my maybe-not-so-good-parenting-confession for today.) If Ryan remembers to get one at work on the day they give out flu-shots, he gets one. But I don't usually do it myself. I think that's because that would require actually thinking ahead. And lets face it, as a stay-at-home mom, I'm not one in one of the high-risk groups. Of course, maybe that's changing with this new strain - If everyone around me starts getting sick, perhaps I'll change my mind!

I have a link my mom emailed to me, I'll look for it and forward it on to you. She is a nurse practitioner, with her Phd...and she is NOT getting it. The email came to her from the Dr. that she worked w/ for years and trusts. (I'll admit he is a little bit of a conspiracy theorist, but he seems to have research to back up this stuff.) I've never gotten a flu shot, and don't plan to. I also don't plan on getting them for my kids. Proper hygiene, and when necessary, isolation. I've even been putting off the MMR for as long as possible. I do get the vaccines, but that one scares me to death! I'll send that on, if you don't get it from me by say noon tomorrow, email or call me...I'm still a little flighty.

Tim's into the whole conspiracy theory thing too and and I'm against the medical community in general (Dr's are WAY overrated). So, nope, no shots here!

My work offers a flu shot clinic, but (oddly enough) they're not offering the H1N1 shot at work. If they did, I'd do it.

We did have all four of our kids vaccinated. I asked my cousin, a pediatrician, her opinion, and she said she recommended it. We felt like it was the right thing to do, espcecially because Ross has an auto-immune disease. It's a whole new ballgame now if he gets sick, so we didn't want to take any chances. Good luck!
